Google Duo and its features:
Google launched Duo a standalone video calling app few days back. Let’s see how it fares against the likes of other well known video calling apps like Skype and Facetime.
It looks similar to Microsoft’s Skype and Apple’s FaceTime. It’s a standalone video calling app, since there’s no option for messaging; its only use is for video chatting unlike the Skype which allows you to message.
Google Duo features a simple UI and is only 5MB in size which makes it an attractive option among video callers. So what makes it unique? There are several cool features available in Duo, but the major feature of Duo is its speed.
Google also hinted that Duo will support audio calls in the near future. With this, it is clear that Google seems to incorporate Duo as the major communication service in the upcoming iterations of Android. If it’s true, then this could end the need for usual cellular calls altogether.
Google Duo’s ‘Knock Knock’ feature is exclusive to Android devices, which displays a live video of the video caller on your Smartphone’s lock screen before you even pick up your Smartphone. Once you pick up the video call, the video chat starts immediately with no black loading screens or delay. The app is extremely responsive in performance, and it’ll be the main USP of the service.
How to Use Google Duo?
Go to the App Store (iOS) or Play Store (Android) and search for “Google Duo”. After finding the Duo app tap “Get” or “Download” on the Duo app.
Tap on the Google Duo icon on your Smartphone to open the app.
After opening the app, you would be taken to the terms of service page. Tap the “I Agree” button.
Turn on the push notifications to get notifications when someone calls you in Duo app. If you don’t want push notifications, tap “Not now”.
If you’re using Smartphone with Android 6.0 Marshmallow or later then, the Google Duo app asks you to grant permission to access the microphone and camera of the Smartphone. Tap Allow the permissions to start using the video calling feature.
Enter your phone number in the phone number field. As soon as you enter your mobile number, a verification code will be sent to the mobile number, which will be used to authenticate your identity.
After the above step, enter the verification code that you received on your phone (Verification code will be present in your messages. Look for the SMS containing your verification code). Enter this code into the verification code field present in the Google Duo app.
Tap ‘Allow’ to grant permission for the Duo app to access your contacts.
Once completing the above steps, Tap on the “Video Call” option and all of your contacts will start appearing on your screen.
Contacts that have the Google Duo app installed will appear first. You can start a video call with any of these contacts right away.
If you want to connect to more number of people then, tap “Invite friends” option and then select the friends you’d like to request to join the Google Duo app. After selecting, tap “Send” in the SMS window.
To start a video call, tap on a contact of your choice to call them. When they pick up your call, the video call will begin and a thumbnail of your screen starts appearing in the bottom-left area of the video call.
If you receive a notification that both parties have enabled “Knock Knock” then, your contact can see your video streaming while you wait for them to answer the call.
